On 23 and 24 March, webinars were broadcasted from the Netherlands Innovation House at the Dutch Embassy in Stockholm. The webinar on March 23 was opened by Bengt van Loosdrecht, the Dutch Ambassador to Sweden. During the webinars, several lectures took place and the finalists pitched their prototype or product. The finalists in the category best prototypes were: CeCe from CREaiTors in Singapore, MyAvos<\/a> from Switzerland and DeepVibes<\/a> from Great Britain.\u00a0In the best product category, the finalists were: InspireD<\/a> Reminiscence app from Great Britain, Genus Home care<\/a> from the Netherlands ReAct app<\/a> from Denmark.<\/p>\n

It was nice to hear the pitches and of course also nice to be present at the broadcast in Stockholm in the company of my daughter Maartje! She has written a nice blog about this from her experience as a humanist caregiver.<\/p>\n

\nLast week I attended the World JAIN Challenge (WJC) in Stockholm with my mother. JAIN is an abbreviation and stands for: Joint Artificial Intelligence Network. JAIN's mission is to develop affordable assistive technologies for people with dementia and caregivers worldwide to improve the quality of life.
\nAt the WJC, people from all over the world could submit ideas (prototypes) and products that fit JAIN's mission. The jury of this Challenge consists of a chairman (not coincidentally: my mother), people with dementia, family caregivers, care professionals, experts in the field of dementia and experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence. On April 6, the winners of the best prototype and the best product will be announced by Conny Helder, Minister for Long-Term Care and Sport.<\/p>\n

Prior to this trip to Stockholm, I did not know whether this Challenge would be a good fit for my work. I work as a humanist counsellor in several nursing homes in Amsterdam. I see my work mainly as making a connection, with compassion at its core: seeing the other as a human being, rather than (for example) as a patient. When I think of assistive technologies in healthcare, I often get an uneasy feeling. As if technology is going to replace people, which is diametrically opposed to my vision.<\/p>\n

At the WJC it became clear to me that technology can also have another effect. It can support the conversation with people suffering from dementia (or their carers). Several products and prototypes of the finalists were aimed at deepening the conversation. For example, by developing an app that can be used as a tool (based on reminiscence) to start a conversation between the person suffering from dementia and his\/her environment. Or a tablet that makes accessible video calls possible, allowing carers to have more remote contact with their loved ones, giving them more peace of mind and less stress.
\nI think of the conversation I had years ago with a man with dementia in a nursing home. He comes from Ireland but has lived in the Netherlands for years. On a large screen I go to Google Maps and we type in his street name. By means of Google Streetview, we 'walk' through his old neighbourhood. Memories surface: the family doctor, the aunt, the place where he ate sweets during break or played with friends. Talking about these memories, seeing his old neighbourhood, realising that he has not forgotten everything: it gives him confidence and makes him happy. It was a wonderful conversation, made possible by technology. I realise, during this JAIN challenge, that my uneasy feeling with technology is not true: I have even used it in practice. How nice would it be to get more attention and more ideas about what else technology can do? Technology does not have to mean that the human side of care is diminished: in this way, it can even improve it. I am looking forward to following these developments and to working with them more consciously myself in practice.<\/p>\n

Zij heeft vanuit haar ervaring als humanistisch verzorger een mooi blog hierover geschreven. Reflectie op de World JAIN Challenge door Maartje de Haas, humanist counsellor Afgelopen week was ik met mijn moeder bij de World JAIN Challenge (WJC) in Stockholm. JAIN is een afkorting en staat voor: Joint Artificial Intelligence Network. De missie van JAIN is het ontwikkelen van betaalbare ondersteunende technologie\u00ebn voor mensen met dementie en mantelzorgers wereldwijd om de kwaliteit van leven te verbeteren. Bij de WJC konden mensen van over de hele wereld idee\u00ebn (prototypes) en producten indienen die aansluiten bij de missie van JAIN. De jury van deze Challenge bestaat uit een voorzitter (niet toevallig: mijn moeder), mensen met dementie, mantelzorgers, zorgprofessionals, experts op gebied van dementie en experts op het gebied van Artificial Intelligence. Op 6 april worden de winnaars van het beste prototype en het beste product bekend gemaakt door Conny Helder, minister voor Langdurige Zorg en Sport. Voorafgaand aan deze reis naar Stockholm wist ik niet of deze Challenge goed bij mijn werk zou aansluiten. Ik werk als humanistisch geestelijk verzorger in verschillende verpleeghuizen in Amsterdam. Ik zie mijn werk vooral als een verbinding aangaan, waarbij de medemenselijkheid centraal staat: de ander als mens zien, in plaats van (bijvoorbeeld) als pati\u00ebnt. Als ik aan ondersteunende technologie\u00ebn in de zorg denk, bekruipt mij vaak een ongemakkelijk gevoel. Alsof de technologie de mens zal gaan vervangen, wat lijnrecht tegenover mijn visie staat. Bij de WJC werd mij duidelijk dat technologie ook een andere werking kan hebben. Het kan een ondersteuning bieden om juist het gesprek met mensen met dementie (of hun mantelzorgers) op gang te brengen. Zo waren meerdere producten en prototypes van de finalisten gericht op het verdiepen van het gesprek. Bijvoorbeeld door het ontwikkelen van een app die (op basis van reminiscentie) als hulpmiddel gebruikt kan worden om het gesprek aan te gaan tussen degene met dementie en zijn\/haar omgeving. Of een tablet die laagdrempelig videobellen mogelijk maakt en mantelzorgers daarmee vaker op afstand contact kunnen hebben met hun naaste, waardoor zij zich meer gerustgesteld voelen en minder stress ervaren. Ik denk aan het gesprek wat ik jaren geleden voerde met een meneer met dementie in het verpleeghuis. Hij komt uit Ierland maar woont al jaren in Nederland. Op een groot scherm ga ik naar Google Maps en we typen zijn straatnaam in. Door middel van Google Streetview \u2018wandelen\u2019 we door zijn oude buurt. Herinneringen komen boven: de huisarts, de tante, de plek waar hij in de pauze snoep at of met vrienden speelden. Het praten over deze herinneringen, het zien van zijn oude buurt, het realiseren dat hij niet alles vergeten is: het geeft hem vertrouwen en stemt hem vrolijk. Het was een prachtig gesprek, mogelijk gemaakt door de technologie. Ik realiseer mij, tijdens deze JAIN challenge, dat mijn ongemakkelijke gevoel bij technologie niet klopt: ik heb het zelfs al in de praktijk gebruikt. Hoe mooi zou het zijn om meer aandacht en meer idee\u00ebn te krijgen over wat technologie nog meer kan doen? De technologie hoeft niet te betekenen dat de menselijke kant van de zorg minder wordt: op deze wijze kan het zelfs voor verbetering zorgen. Ik kijk er naar uit om deze ontwikkelingen te volgen en hier in de praktijk nog bewuster zelf mee aan de slag te gaan. Het webinar op 23 maart werd geopend door Bengt van Loosdrecht, de Nederlandse ambassadeur in Zweden. Tijdens de webinars vonden diverse lezingen plaats en pitchten de finalisten hun prototype of product. De finalisten in de categorie beste prototypes waren: CeCe van CREaiTors uit Singapore, MyAvos uit Zwitserland en DeepVibes uit Groot-Brittani\u00eb.\u00a0In de categorie beste product waren de finalisten: InspireD Reminiscence app uit Groot Brittani\u00eb, Genus Home care uit Nederland en ReAct app uit Denemarken. Het was mooi om de pitches te horen en natuurlijk ook leuk om in Stockholm bij de uitzending aanwezig thuis in gezelschap van mijn dochter Maartje! Zij heeft vanuit haar ervaring als humanistisch verzorger een mooi blog hierover geschreven. Reflectie op de World JAIN Challenge door Maartje de Haas, humanist counsellor Afgelopen week was ik met mijn moeder bij de World JAIN Challenge (WJC) in Stockholm. JAIN is een afkorting en staat voor: Joint Artificial Intelligence Network. De missie van JAIN is het ontwikkelen van betaalbare ondersteunende technologie\u00ebn voor mensen met dementie en mantelzorgers wereldwijd om de kwaliteit van leven te verbeteren. Bij de WJC konden mensen van over de hele wereld idee\u00ebn (prototypes) en producten indienen die aansluiten bij de missie van JAIN. De jury van deze Challenge bestaat uit een voorzitter (niet toevallig: mijn moeder), mensen met dementie, mantelzorgers, zorgprofessionals, experts op gebied van dementie en experts op het gebied van Artificial Intelligence. Op 6 april worden de winnaars van het beste prototype en het beste product bekend gemaakt door Conny Helder, minister voor Langdurige Zorg en Sport. Voorafgaand aan deze reis naar Stockholm wist ik niet of deze Challenge goed bij mijn werk zou aansluiten. Ik werk als humanistisch geestelijk verzorger in verschillende verpleeghuizen in Amsterdam. Ik zie mijn werk vooral als een verbinding aangaan, waarbij de medemenselijkheid centraal staat: de ander als mens zien, in plaats van (bijvoorbeeld) als pati\u00ebnt. Als ik aan ondersteunende technologie\u00ebn in de zorg denk, bekruipt mij vaak een ongemakkelijk gevoel. Alsof de technologie de mens zal gaan vervangen, wat lijnrecht tegenover mijn visie staat. Bij de WJC werd mij duidelijk dat technologie ook een andere werking kan hebben. Het kan een ondersteuning bieden om juist het gesprek met mensen met dementie (of hun mantelzorgers) op gang te brengen. Zo waren meerdere producten en prototypes van de finalisten gericht op het verdiepen van het gesprek. Bijvoorbeeld door het ontwikkelen van een app die (op basis van reminiscentie) als hulpmiddel gebruikt kan worden om het gesprek aan te gaan tussen degene met dementie en zijn\/haar omgeving. Of een tablet die laagdrempelig videobellen mogelijk maakt en mantelzorgers daarmee vaker op afstand contact kunnen hebben met hun naaste, waardoor zij zich meer gerustgesteld voelen en minder stress ervaren. Ik denk aan het gesprek wat ik jaren geleden voerde met een meneer met dementie in het verpleeghuis. Hij komt uit Ierland maar woont al jaren in Nederland. Op een groot scherm ga ik naar Google Maps en we typen zijn straatnaam in. Door middel van Google Streetview \u2018wandelen\u2019 we door zijn oude buurt. Herinneringen komen boven: de huisarts, de tante, de plek waar hij in de pauze snoep at of met vrienden speelden. Het praten over deze herinneringen, het zien van zijn oude buurt, het realiseren dat hij niet alles vergeten is: het geeft hem vertrouwen en stemt hem vrolijk. Het was een prachtig gesprek, mogelijk gemaakt door de technologie. Ik realiseer mij, tijdens deze JAIN challenge, dat mijn ongemakkelijke gevoel bij technologie niet klopt: ik heb het zelfs al in de praktijk gebruikt. Hoe mooi zou het zijn om meer aandacht en meer idee\u00ebn te krijgen over wat technologie nog meer kan doen? De technologie hoeft niet te betekenen dat de menselijke kant van de zorg minder wordt: op deze wijze kan het zelfs voor verbetering zorgen. Ik kijk er naar uit om deze ontwikkelingen te volgen en hier in de praktijk nog bewuster zelf mee aan de slag te gaan. Het Netherlands Innovation Netwerk (gevestigd in de Nederlandse Ambassade in Stockholm) was een fantastische host voor dit event. JAIN is opgericht door Artificial Intelligence expert Hans Arnold, die nu al zijn aandacht richt op het werkveld van de dementiezorg.
